Rather than recreating a particular landscape the paintings in this series aim to express the essence of a place. I am inspired by the natural world, both its beauty and its cruelty. Each painting on the surface is pleasing to the eye but when you look closer you will see how the surface of the painting has been built up with many layers and then marred with intensive mark making including gouges, scratches and cuts through the surface of the paint. I then use a power sander to excavate and reveal what lays beneath the surface; the final result having a complexity that I never could have planned. I believe that the ecological balance of our planet has been compromised and as an artist I employ visual language to inspire my viewer to think not only about their impact on their immediate environment but also about the natural world as a whole.
